Our Advisory Board — Introduction Sir Victor Blank

Some weeks ago we announced Dr Phillipp Rosler’s appointment as one of our advisory board members. Today we’d like to give you insights about another advisory board member. Sir Victor Blank, former Chairman of Lloyds Banking Group. As an advisor, he will contribute to the Numbrs’ strategy by working closely with our leadership team. His expertise in the finance industry and a broad network from media, law to governments will lead our growth path in the UK.

Sir Victor’s career began as a Solicitor, and he became the youngest Partner in Clifford-Turner (now Clifford Chance) in 1969.

In 1981 Sir Victor was asked to head the corporate finance department of merchant bank Charterhouse Japhet and to become a Managing Director (and later Chairman and Chief Executive). His contacts and competence led to Charterhouses’ major success in the 1980’s with high profile buyouts and they also underpinned the merger of Trinity Mirror (now known as Reach plc) when he was the Chairman of Mirror Group Newspapers in 1999. This created the largest public newspaper publisher in the UK.

Sir Victor became the Chairman of Great Universal Stores (renamed GUS) in 2000. This successful family business had a significant portfolio of companies. Its direction, its focus and its culture changed and it ultimately became four major and successful operating companies. The businesses included Experian, Burberry and Argos. The constituent businesses were spun off creating very significant enhancement in value at the time; as independent companies they have all grown since.

In 2006 Sir Victor was asked to become Chairman of Lloyds TSB. He shared with the Board an ambition to build Lloyds’ presence in the UK market. Regardless the turbulent financial markets in 2008, the Lloyds TSB Board believed that a significant expansion in the domestic market was the right course of action for the business. The goal was to establish Lloyds TSB to be in the number one position in many sectors of the UK retail banking market and this was achieved.

All in all, the huge achievements and experience in the good and turbulent banking years, Sir Victor can be held up as a household name, with influence in business and the city. With his positive approach to life and to work, it is not hard to see how he has made it to major positions in British business life, including his position for four years as a UK Ambassador for Business.
