A freelancer working remotely from Nigeria
my name is Ifedapo Olarewaju, my friends call me Ife. I’m a software engineer based in Lagos, Nigeria and I’m a freelance backend engineer at Numbrs. I work with the team covering the app’s Store section. The Numbrs Store team is responsible for rolling out new banking products onto the Numbrs app. In my free time, I like to work on open-source projects and sometimes write poetry and attend local meetups.
Ife, why did you want to become an engineer?
I always appreciated the art of creativity. Building things with a touch of you in it. In some fields, it’s a bit harder to do these things (because of the resources it may require). But in software engineering, you only need your machine, some open-source language or tool, your brain, and you are good to go.
How does your daily (work) routine look like?
I wake up at about 6 am (WAT) my time, 7 am Zurich time (CET). I get ready, and then I’m at my work desk around 30 minutes later. Then I start by clearing some tasks from the previous day. I give my engineering manager, who is based at the Numbrs headquarters, my daily update and then I pick up the new tasks that I need to work on. Depending on how intense my work schedule is that day, I might order some food when I get hungry, or I could just take a stroll to the restaurant instead. I appreciate the freedom that remote work brings me.
What kind of reactions do you get when you tell your friends and family that you are working for a swiss banking app?
They immediately mention “Swiss Money”. No, no, just kidding 🙂 Most of my friends are used to the fact that I’m usually working remotely for either a European or an American company. So they are barely interested in the details. They just know that I’m working 🙂
Why did you decide to work for Numbrs?
Though it’s not my first time working with larger teams, I am used to working with relatively smaller teams. I’d forgotten the excitement that comes with working with such skilled teams where the engineering policies are taken way more seriously, and decision making is more critical.
How do you interact with your colleagues in Zurich?
Slack Slack Slack! The only way not to slack 🙂
How would you describe the app Numbrs?
It’s such a masterpiece! I like the fact that, despite that its purpose is to digitise banking, it also doesn’t take anything from actual banks, collaborating with them instead.
Could the app become a success in Nigeria, too?
Most certainly yes! I personally would find the Store section very handy.
Thanks, Ife, we are happy to have you with us.
